Naero's Gambit by Mason Elliott is the 2nd book in his Space Clans Adventure series and is categorized as "Space Opera". It continues the story begun in "Naero's Run" and the adventure of a young "Spacer" female as she develops her hidden powers which result from alien data which was secretly stored on her DNA molecules. However, Naero also recognizes she has a "Dark Force" within that she has limited control of and this concerns her a great deal. As a result she agrees to train with and be tested by the "Mystics" who have the power of life and death over her. Just as her three years of training comes to and end and her fate is to be decided, she gets a reprieve because of a massive invasion by aliens. She returns to her people and leads the fight which ultimately defeats the enemy but also causes her to unleash her Dark Force in her final fight resulting in massive enemy destruction and the disappearance of an entire planet. Naero Gambit A Spacer Clans Adventure Volume 2 Mason Elliott Books Reviews

This is the worst editing that I have come across in months as there are errors on virtually every page. Sometimes,it takes a couple of readings to determine what word should be there. It isn't just an incorrect use of you're for your or we're for were (or vice versa) but letters are left off (on for one) and other mistakes. This book would have easily rated a four if not a five except for the highly frustrating mistakes. I suppose that I have grown accustomed to the less than perfect editing of many of these self published books but this one is a new low.
I really loved the first book and I also enjoyed this one, but not as much somehow because of the doom and gloom of war and successive invasions never really lifting long enough for Naero to relax and get a chance to enjoy life fully, if only for a moment. The fact that she is so driven and desperate has taken over the book in my opinion and it makes for a grim read. I do like how she is evolving as a character with good values and honor above all, but it would be good if she let her hair down here and there and got a little TLC in. The author's imagination has however not lost any appeal and the universe she depicts is fascinating.
I really enjoyed reading this book, as well as the first in the series, Naero's Run. As a matter of fact, I was very disappointed to realize that I was going to have to wait for the third installment! The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of five was a sense at times of a sort of deus ex machina - from the characters sudden development of even more cosmic powers. I am normally a reader of a lot of "hard" military sci fi where writers lay out the rules of their universe and stick hard to them, but here Mason Elliott weaves a different kind of tale, one that is very enjoyable and different. But if you go into it expecting starships, weapons and characters having to stay to the laws of physics, then take a pass! I had to remind myself of this at various points, where a character would be "drained of all energy and power" and then just because they had to, jump up to complete 6 more impossible tasks. But, really not a blemish, just a different style and hard for at least this reader.
I am an avid Sci-Fi reader, but I don't like hardcore Sciency Sci-Fi . For me, it doesn't have to follow the laws of science and physics, so long as the story line makes sense and it's a good read that keeps moving. This is precisely one of those. The plot is good - sci-fi enough for me, but not so hard sci-fi that I can't keep up. Sometimes sci-fi gets too techy for me and then I get bored with it. There's enough details to keep it legit, but not so much that it drowns out the fiction part of the story. I read Naero's Run which the author had for free, which then caused me to purchase Naero's Gambit and I will now be purchasing Fury. If you like these I also recommend Mike Shepherd's Kris Longknife Series, Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern and Freedom Series, Jean Johnson's Their's Not to Reason Why. All my recommendations I was able to find through my library's Overdrive lending program. McCaffrey and Shepherds series are both LONG so purchasing might be out of the realm for some.
3 stars is a book I'd tell a friend was OK if they asked me about it, 4 stars is a book I'd recommend to a friend but with some caveats, 5 stars is a book that I'd push at a friend and say "Here, read this!"

It says something about the engaging nature of the story that I'm wiling to give this book 4 stars despite the presence of gross errors in grammar (repeated instances of 3-4 sentences, one or two of which lack verbs, that should have been a single sentence with comma separated clauses and instead were each given their own paragraph). Aside from the grammar, suspension of disbelief a must but no more so than with much of the space opera genre. There was a single glaring continuity error -- others may feel there were more -- and overall I had a problem with the fact that Naero's place in the chain of command (which space operas live and die by) was very amorphous. At the end of the day though ... it kept me engrossed until the end.
The first (free ) book hooked me for the second, and it was also quite a page-turner, with an interesting story and decent character development (though it could be more consistent). I was a bit disappointed to see the storyline descending from science fiction to fantasy, essentially becoming a magic-and-dragons type story. As a bit of a spoiler, it gets worse in book three. The problem is that you go from well thought out solutions to crises to "and then magic happened". In fact even beyond that, the story line suffers from a bit too much of the "and they arrived just in time" repeatedly. I just want once in a while for things to either go wrong entirely, or for things to have worked out well with planning in advance, not accident of timing.

Even so I recommend it through at least the second book, and through the third if you are into magic and fantasy more than hard science fiction.
