This novel tells the story of Sam Byers, the last man still working in what had been a large shirt factory in Troy, NY. Sam is a leading expert on button technology but his business is slipping away. In his attempt to revive interest in his unique expertise, Sam starts a relationship with the U.S. Army to transform buttons into warfighting platform with automated capabilities. Sam knows buttons, but he knows nothing about warfighting. Still, his misadventures lead to what he considers a successful process for conducting research and development. Sam narrates this, his seminal case, to illustrate what he has learned. (Caution individual readers may not find the process is repeatable in their environment unless it involves inscrutable spies, paintballing bikers, squealing guinea pigs, and an abandoned building with a footprint covering a whole city block in which to conduct experiments.)

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As a native of Troy, it certainly was fun to tour many of the landmarks that every native of this area will recognize. The lead character, Sam Byers works in an enormous former shirt factory on River Street in Troy, which has re-located its entire operation, except Sam's lab, to Atlanta.The author is obviously as familiar with Troy as he is with the U.S. Department of Defense bureaucracy. However Sam Byers approaches the world of Defense Department procurement as a complete outsider. Like a modern Alice in Wonderland, Sam ventures into the byzantine, convoluted world of Defense Department subcontracting..
While it may not sound like the basis for a funny and engaging story, it truly is. Anyone who has ever worked for a bureaucratic organization of any size will appreciate Sam's adventures as he discovers the absurdities built into the federal system. The acronyms alone are enough to drive Sam to distraction.
I highly recommend this book. The author has a very engaging writing style, and a way with words and phrases that make this book a real delight. I loved this book, with its plot twists and turns. I hope he continues to write about Sam's future adventures.

Being a Troy resident who is very familiar with all of the landmarks referenced in the book,
I thoroughly enjoyed Phil's work. I found the story clever and laughed out loud at some of the
main character's predicaments . Phil's dry sense of humor came through along with his obvious knowledge of the military and it's policies and procedures. Looking forward to his next book.
Got hooked right away and couldn't put it down. Who knew "How the Army Works" could be so interesting. The author took a difficult process (Army Combat Developments) and made it enjoyable. Really enjoyed how he tied all of the sub-plots together and made me wait until the very end to see the results. Left you hanging in a couple of areas...maybe a sequel in the making.
I thoroughly enjoyed Phil Casey's first novel and I sincerely hope that he continues to write. I found it to be a real page turner. I especially admired Mr Casey's ability to blend humor and some nonsense ( I mean that in a good way) with a great storyline and interesting characters. (Nipper was one of my favorites). In some respects his style of writing reminded me of some earlier works by Wood Allen that I also prize.
I think it helps if you have some military background although not a lot is needed, it's loosely based on Phil's experiences on his military career so there are some military references that slip in town again. as I am in a book club, I find the book easy to put down read my signed book and get back to The Seminal Case etc" which is good. it's a fun read
